“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’” – Psalm 126:2
If you’ve ever walked down the streets of an urban center, you will immediately notice the downcast eyes and averted gazes which meet you. And if you’ve ever tried to say “Hello” to those passing, you likely have been met with more than one silent stare, a cold shoulder, or a raised eyebrow.
Friendliness, unfortunately, in too many sub-cultures has become the one-off instead of the norm. Sometimes, these gestures reflect personal struggles—a fear of being rejected, a self-esteem which pushes them into feeling inferior. Sometimes, they reflect shock. It’s the proverbial deer in the headlight. What to do with this unknown expression or act?
We have become accustomed to passing people by without any acknowledgement or with the understanding that everyone is busy, trying to get where we need to be.
But what about the scripture that reminds us that God “has loved us with an everlasting love?” All of us. Beloved. Forever. Let this sink in for a moment. Each person we pass every day is deeply loved by God. And too many don’t know it.
The power of a simple word and smile has been shown to transform a person’s day. And it doesn’t take a lot of effort.
This week, bring joy to someone’s life by simply acknowledging that person. Smile at each person you pass and say “Hi.” At first, it may get tiring, but hang in there. You never know where God may take the moment, and the conversation.
Reflect on how you felt doing this, and what God did in these small gestures, then consider how you might continue this type of kindness in the days and weeks to come in the different settings you find yourself in.
